ABSTRACT
This research entitled “A Study of Sentences Used in Emmerich Roland’s The Day After Tomorrow” is intended to find out and describe the sentence types and the sentence patterns used in The Day After Tomorrow movie.
This research belongs to a descriptive qualitative research. The use of a descriptive qualitative research is appropriate because the data taken are in the form of words without employing any statistical procedure. The data of this research is taken from the script dialog of The Day After Tomorrow movie. In collecting the data, the writer borrowed and watched the DVD of The Day After Tomorrow movie, read the screenplay, then made note and saved them in files. The data analysis was done by identifying, classifying, describing the sentences used in The Day After Tomorrow movie and drawing the conclusion.
The result of this research shows that there are three kinds of sentence by types, namely declarative sentence, interrogative sentence, and imperative sentence. Meanwhile based on the sentence patterns, there are nine patterns S + V, S + V + Adv, S + V + O, S + V + IO + DO, S + V + O + to infinitive, S + V + O
+ Adj, S + LV + Noun, S + LV + Adj, S + LV + Adv, and There + Be + S + Adv. Declarative sentence is the sentence type that is most frequently used (49.92%), followed by interrogative sentence (37.54%) and imperative sentence (15.53%). S+ V + O pattern is the sentence pattern which is most frequently used with the highest percentage (35.18%), followed by S + V (19.75%), S + LV +Adj (15.38%), S + V + Adv (14.81%), S + LV +Adv (6.79%), S + LV + Noun (3.70%), S + V + IO + DO(2.46%), There + Be + S + Adv (2.46%) and S + V + O + Adj (1.23%).
