Call for Applications for the 2014 Study of the United States Institute for Student Leaders on Global Environmental Issues

The Public Affairs Section of the Embassy of the United States in Jakarta is pleased to announce the call for applications to the 2014 Study of the U.S. Institutes for Student Leaders on “Global Environment Issues.”

Program Description

The Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) for Student Leaders are intensive short term academic programs whose purpose is to provide groups of undergraduate student leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States, while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills. The five-week Institutes will consist of a balanced series of seminar discussions, readings, group presentations, and lectures. The coursework and classroom activities will be complemented by educational travel, site visits, leadership activities, and volunteer opportunities within the local community. The Institutes will include an academic residency component of approximately four weeks and a domestic study tour of approximately one week. During the academic residency, participants will also have the opportunity to engage in educational and cultural activities outside of the classroom. The Institute on Global Environmental Issues will be hosted by the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. The four week academic residency will explore the role that environmental policy has played in the economic and political development of the United States. The Institute will use experiential learning techniques to expose participants to current themes in the field, including natural resource management, sustainable development/sustainable agricultural practices, food security, ecotourism, energy generation (new and traditional forms), and water management and treatment. The issues will be explored from numerous angles: local grassroots activism and civic initiatives, market-oriented approaches, and federal government policies and regulation. Finally, the Institute will explore environmental issues in the context of a globalized society, and draw comparisons between the United States and the participants’ home countries. Students will also have the opportunity to leave the classroom to meet with community leaders, and representatives of non-profit organizations. The academic residency will be complemented by an educational tour that will take participants to another area of the U.S. where they will meet with local, state, private, and nonprofit organizations working in the field. The Institute will then conclude with a 3 day program in Washington, D.C. Information on the 2013 program can be found at http://www.susieastwestcenter.com/.

Department of Architecture participated in KAAB Process

2013 will end soon but the memories will never go so fast, it will stay in our brain forever..
Well, Department of Architecture Islamic University of Indonesia has so many activities this year and me as the LO for it..
This time, i come with process of accreditation by KAAB in Korean University. This moment happened around March when some lecturers visited the some universities in Korea. Clearly described in the first picture that there was committee meeting and Mr. Wing joined that meeting as delegation from Dept or Arch.

Committee meeting is one of agenda in the process of accreditation. The visited university has prepared everything, one of prepared thing is architectural presentation board (APREB). The university displayed it in three part, left, right and middle. Providing scale model support the apred which has been made by the students to show their design clearly to the public.

Seeing and Watching from what has been displayed by the university is not enough for the committee. Then, it makes the committee to do audience with the students. The students gather in the meeting room and there was no lecturer there. Only KAAB committee and observers, from Dept of Arch actually. The meeting room is so comfort for me because it makes the people who are in the podium are able to see the students who sat in the back and so does vice versa.

Entering the clean comfort library will make you never want to leave this room. There are so many book collections both in Korean language and English. These collections help the students to broader their knowledge in understanding the materials what they get in the classroom.  I am sure that there is no ash in the book shelve and this condition is contrary with library in our country, Indonesia.

The librarian always maintain the books and every book is in its place which makes the students in easy when they want to read it. Meanwhile in Indonesia? the book goes to other shelve and makes the students cannot read what they want to read because the book is missing from its place. The clear shiny manageable book shelve in Korean university is really interesting and this condition support the students to feel comfort and want to stay longer in library which open 24 hours.

Last but not least, Korean university provides public place for students so they can do their task in the campus. By providing a big table with some couples chairs will be useful for students because they do not need to go to commercial place to do their project which will spend money. They can do it in the campus and it is safe, actually.
